BREEAM C to support ambitious district planning

Hiedanranta in Tampere has been awarded with an interim BREEAM Communities certificate (BREEAM C). This is globally recognised and Europe’s leading method for assessing the sustainability of regional projects. The purpose of BREEAM is to ensure that Hiedanranta is designed to be socially, economically and environmentally sustainable. The assessment emphasises the perspective of the resident and takes into account local conditions and climate.

Out of a three-stage assessment, the project has now passed the first stage, which assessed the Hiedanranta Master Plan. Next, we will move on to stages two and three, which will initially focus on the first pending town plan area. The planning of the area is carried out in close cooperation between the City of Tampere and Hiedanrannan Kehitys Oy. Hiedanranta’s BREEAM Communities process has been led by the framework contract partner of the City of Tampere, Sitowise Oy.

The assessment method helps ensure that the planning

  • encourages cycling and walking throughout the year
  • reduces emissions from transport
  • pays attention to the recycling of construction and demolition waste
  • reduces light pollution
  • ensures the identity and preservation of the area
  • involves the people of the municipality in the preparation stage, especially in connection with common and open spaces
  • minimises carbon emissions from energy consumption in buildings
  • maintains a long-term plan with the management of green areas
  • enables diverse housing, such as affordable and supported housing
  • reduces the environmental impact of infrastructure construction, e.g. through material choices

Examples of everyday life

BREAAM guides you to plan a district with

  • a reasonable distance from each apartment to a public transport connecting point
  • public transport stops that are accessible, covered and protect you from the weather
  • stops that have adequate lighting, real-time schedule monitors and a waste bin
  • the course of delivery vehicles that is thought out in such a way that the vehicles need to access parking spaces, cycling and pedestrian routes as little as possible
  • bike paths that are direct, safe and well-guided
  • sufficient storage space for bikes in residential buildings
  • energy-efficient lighting in public spaces that does not produce light pollution
  • public art, sports facilities, playgrounds, parks and squares
  • mainly native and ecologically compatible planted plant species
  • preservation of species specific to the area
  • many more features that form a sustainable and welcoming part of the city
