We work towards a BREEAM C environmental certification

Hiedanranta has been awarded an interim BREEAM Communities certificate. This is a globally recognised and Europe’s leading method for assessing the sustainability of regional projects.

A new district for 25,000 residents is being prepared on the shores of Lake Näsijärvi in West Tampere. The BREEAM Communities -method is designed to ensure that Hiedanranta is designed to be socially, economically and environmentally sustainable. The assessment emphasises the perspective of the resident and takes into account local conditions and climate.

Out of a three-stage assessment, the project has now passed the first stage, which assessed the Hiedanranta Master Plan. Next, we will move on to stages two and three, which will initially focus on the first pending town plan area. The planning of the area is carried out in close cooperation between the City of Tampere and Hiedanrannan Kehitys Oy.

A method to support ambitious goals

So far, there is no BREEAM C certified site in Finland. The nearest regional projects that have passed certification are Forusparken in Stavanger, Norway and Masthusen in Malmö, Sweden. According to Mikko Leinonen, CEO of Hiedanranta Kehitys Oy, the assessment method is also well suited to the goals of Hiedanranta, which aims to be carbon negative.

– We want to make a smooth, energy-efficient and nature-conscious part of the city that has respect for the old.

Hiedanranta’s BREEAM Communities process has been led by the framework partner of the City of Tampere, Sitowise. Branch Manager Jenni Lautso sees Hiedanranta as an inspiring and potential site as the sustainability assessment has been started at a conveniently early stage of the project.

– During the process, we can still steer the project in a more sustainable direction. In addition, Hiedanranta has a lot of ambition, which can be seen, for example, in innovative experiments.
